MOPA Visit (Online Museum )

I virtually visited the Museum of Performing Arts (MOPA). I saw many wonderful photographs. Every exhibit was unique. There was one exhibition in particular that caught my eye because it exposed me to something different. The exhibition was Out of the Shadow: Contemporary Chinese Photography. One of the reasons this particular exhibit caught my attention was the selected contemporary Chinese artists have never been exhibited in an America museum before. All the photos are created by Chinese artists who question traditional aesthetics, local and global histories, and the photographic medium. One of the photographs titled “Nine Dragons” reminded me of The Never Ending Story due to the obvious name in the title Dragon. It’s a virtual reality video created in 2018 by the artist Yang Yongliang. It captures an astonishing feeling of magic through a virtual reality of nine dragons flying in a circular motion around what appears to be a bright moon in the starry night. The photograph titled “Memory of Pomegranate” had a uniqueness that I haven’t seen before. Foremost, it is an archival pigment print created in 2005 by the artist Hong Lei. The background of this archival pigment print is white with a pomegranate branch hung on what seems black copper wire. Alongside the pomegranate branch there are nine mosquito flies and one butterfly hung on separate black copper wire as well. It’s very unique that truly stands out in this exhibition. I enjoyed this museum because it offers a great deal of work to inspire anyone to photograph in different ways and see different types of work that is done all around the world. I hope someday to go in person. My recreation of Memory of Pomegranate but instead of pomegranate my piece is called “Flying off the pages a butterfly dream”. My second recreation of Nine Dragons but instead of dragons my piece is called “Three butterflies in a white forest”.
